This one-day conference, on May 10^th, explores interpretations of Dante Alighieri’sÌýDivine ComedyÌýthrough the lens of visual art, music, movement, and performance. The contributors present an up-to-date exchange of ideas on different historical and contemporary contexts in which the creative and performance arts have engaged with Dante’s poem to create new artworks in different media. The conference draws inspiration from the diverse elements of Wayne McGregor’s ballet,ÌýThe Dante Project, premiered in full in autumn 2021 and since repeated in the programmes at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden. Stimulated by the contrasting views and reactions provoked by the ballet, the conference presents reflections from leading Dante scholars on the ways that McGregor’s ballet stimulates discussion of theÌýDivine Comedy’s rich afterlife in the interpretations of dancers, musicians, and artists, and concludes with a Round Table discussion.

Contributors include: Lachlan Hughes (Durham), Helena Phillips-Robins (Cambridge), Francesca Southerden (Oxford), Heather Webb (Cambridge).

The winning short stories are chosen by a jury made up of writers, literary agents and creative writing experts and are published by partner online literary websites.

Hide and Seek

Hide and Seek is a moving and darkly entertaining play that pits two teenage boys against each other in the face of the contagiousÌýprejudice of their small Italian town. Gio, who has never felt accepted by anyone –Ìýnot by parents, teachers orÌýpeers – decides to disappear and hide out in a secluded cave. When his popular classmate Mirko discovers him, Gio enlists him as an accomplice, convincing him to preserveÌýhis secret despite the media frenzy over his disappearance. The boys embark on an unexpectedÌýjourney towards self-discovery and acceptance, setting in motion a series of dramatic consequences.Ìý

The play shines a light on bullying, homophobia and the power of social media, exploring how discriminatory voices can deeply impact young minds. It highlights how being yourself is still a risky proposition in our society when it comes to sexual orientation and independent thought.Ìý

Tobia Rossi is one of Italy’s foremost playwrights. Hide and Seek won the 2019 Mario Fratti Award at In Scena! Italian Theater Festival NY. The worldwide premiere of the English translation was presented in May 2022 at The Tank, NYC. This production transfers from VAULT Festival 2023 where it was first performed in front of a British audience.

There will be post-show events after some performances. On 18th March the post-show will be dedicated to the 520·òÆÞÂÛ̳ with a disussion on:

“A Suburbia Italian Story Travelling the World”, Ìýfeaturing Cindy Marcolina (Theatre Critics),ÌýTobia Rossi (Writer) andÌýDimitri Scarlato (Com.It.Es Councillor and Composer).

Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution – 23 and 24 April

Burning HeartsÌý(Ti Mangio il Cuore)

On Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 March CinemaltaliaUK’s mini film festival DONNE DI MAFIA returns to the Riverside Studios in London for its fourth edition. The festivalfocuses on the role and presence of women in the Italian mafia, and their portrayal in Italian cinema. The event is sponsored by the University of Bath, and after the March London screenings the festival will travel to Bath, where films will be shown at the Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution on 23 and 24 April.

This year’s line-up features Black SoulsÌý(Anime Nere) by Francesco Munzi, the 1958 classic title The Challenge (La Sfida) by Francesco Rosi, Burning HeartsÌý(Ti Mangio il Cuore) by Pippo Mezzapesa, and Nevia by Nunzia De Stefano. Screenings will befollowed by Q&As with Black Souls director Francesco Munzi, the lead actress of Nevia, Virginia Apicella, plus a variety of panelists including journalists Clare Longrigg and Giorgia Scaturro, and academics Gaetana Marrone, Isabella Clough Marinaro and Veronica Vegna. Francesco Munzi and Virginia Apicella will be available for press interviews when in London.
